About

Hi, I’m Chris. I run Read and Filed as a place to share honest thoughts on the books I read. I enjoy dark and speculative fiction, science fiction, grimdark, horror, and the occasional graphic novel, but I’ll pick up anything that catches my interest or challenges me.

I read because I enjoy stories and the craft behind them. I also know that while it might take me a few days or weeks to get through a book, an author may have spent months or years writing it. That deserves respect. My reviews are written with that in mind. I am not here to tear something apart for entertainment. I try to be fair, honest, and clear. If I point out something that does not work for me, I do it with the understanding that creating a book is not easy and that every story has a reader it was meant for.

I do my best to rate books based on what the author intended the book to be and who the target audience is, not only whether it personally hit every box for me. I have found that this approach leads to more helpful reviews for the right readers and gives proper credit to the work and genre the book belongs to. You will see me evaluate tone, execution, pacing, theme, character development, and how well the book delivers on its own premise.

This blog is a hobby and a creative outlet. I am not reading at lightning speed or trying to churn out content. I would rather sit with a book and give it the attention it deserves than rush through it. If you enjoy thoughtful and balanced impressions rather than hype or harshness, you will fit right in here.

Thanks for visiting and sharing time with these stories. Hopefully you find something here that points you toward your next great read.
